Harold
Miersma
Jun 22, 1932 — Jun 14, 2024
Harold T. Miersma was called to heaven on June 14, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Miersma and Nettie Lokhorst, and his siblings, Paul (Fanny), Eibert (Helen), Harriet Kas (Gerrit), Wilma, Caroline Spronk (Gerrit), and Norma Jean Slegers (Clarence). By his in-laws, Dorothy Schut Dornbos (Dave), Henry Kuiper (Jean), Hester Smith (Henry), Jeanette Kuiper, Richard Vandergon, Bert Kuiper, Norma Ensing Kuiper, Joseph Vellenga, and Kenneth Ensing.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife JoAnn (Kuiper) Miersma and his in-laws Joan Spronk, John (Joyce) Kuiper, Thelma Vandergon (Vern Anderson), Sadie Kuiper, Willis Kuiper, Albertha Kuiper, Lori Vellenga, Ann Ensing, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Harold was born in Ruthton, MN; the youngest of seven children. At 6 months old he was severely burned in an accident, eventually losing his right leg. He suffered from the resulting injuries for the rest of his life but was blessed with grace, love, a tender heart, and lived as a man of God.
After completing his degree in education at Calvin College he taught at Christian schools in Hudsonville, Lansing, and Southwest Illinois for seven years. After moving to Chicago, he worked in the computer department of an insurance company until retirement.
In 1956 a co-worker invited Harold to a dinner which Jo Ann Kuiper also attended. They began dating after he offered her a ride to Trinity Reformed Church; then married on Friday, June 13, 1958 at a ceremony in Maple Lake, Minnesota. The day before he went to heaven they celebrated 66 happy years together.
In addition to a lifelong love of reading and history, Harold enjoyed travel. Together Jo Ann and Harold visited all of the US states, Israel, the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, and Canada. They moved from Chicago to Grand Rapids after retiring; residing in Breton Woods Holland Home for 22 years. In addition to serving on the library committee there
he enjoyed the fellowship of friends and family.
The increased pain of his amputated leg and other health issues required him to move into an assisted care building in Breton Woods on May 2nd. To end his constant pain God called home to heaven on June 14.
Although Harold will be missed by all who knew him and found his Godly life an example, we give thanks that he is enjoying the joys of heaven. May you also look forward to eternal life in heaven and give glory to our redeemer and savior.
