Gordon P. Start, age 87, of Kentwood, passed away on October 15, 2024, from complications of a recent stroke. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Esther; children Karen and Jim De Vries, Dr. Robert and Dr. Susan Start, Brian Start, Marc and Paula Start; grandchildren Jennifer and Joshua Dorhout, Kevin De Vries, Nichole De Vries, Dr. Ethan Start, Natalie Start, Kara and Jackson Murray, Alisha Start, Julia Start; great-granddaughter Daphne Dorhout. He is also survived by his sister Nettie Dykhouse, sisters and brothers-in-law Judy Start, Donna Start, Joanne Jansen, Marge and Rev. Calvin Vander Meyden; and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brothers Dr. Armond Start, Herbert Start, and brother-in-law Al Dykhouse. Gordon was a registered professional engineer and served most recently for 29 years as Kentwood City Engineer. He thanks the Kentwood citizens for his paycheck all those years. Gordon also served his country as a Lieutenant in the US Public Health Service in Washington DC. He graduated from Southwest Christian School, Grand Rapids Christian High School, and Calvin College. Gordon appreciated his University of Michigan education which culminated in a Master of Public Administration degree. Gordon capped a lifelong running program by running in the Boston Marathon in 2009. The family wishes to thank Faith Hospice and Trillium Woods for their compassionate care. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 18, from 6 to 8 PM at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, October 19 at 11 AM at Cutlerville East Christian Reformed Church, 501 68th St. SE with Rev. Ed Visser officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish, may make a memorial contribution to Cutlerville East Christian Reformed Church.
