Gerrit J. Ruiter, age 90, of Grand Rapids passed away Sunday, December 10, 2023 at the Raybrook Nursing unit of the Holland Home. He was born in Platte, South Dakota on December 9, 1933. Gerrit was a graduate of Calvin College. He was drafted into the Army upon graduation and Gary married Eileen Van Eizenga upon his completion of basic training. His working career came later, first as an employee at General Electric and later as a co-business owner in the manufactured housing industry. After retiring, Gary and Eileen founded the Samaritan's Carriage ministry. Church life, volunteering and the Samaritan's Carriage were central to who Gary and Eileen were. Gary was preceded in death by Eileen, and also was the last of his siblings. Gerrit Junior Ruiter is survived by daughter Laurie Deseau, son Barry (Sandi) Ruiter, and son Joe (Kathy) Ruiter. Eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren will miss their Grampa and Grandpa Great. There will be a celebration of life service for Gary at Westend CRC (1015 Westend St., Grand Rapids) on December 29, 2023. Visitation from 1:30 – 3:00 PM will precede the memorial service at 3:00 PM.
