May 5, 1934 — Apr 24, 2026
Gerald Frederick Schuur, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was born on May 5, 1934, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Fred and Marie (Host) Schuur. He graduated from Muskegon High School in Muskegon, Michigan and then graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Gerald (Jerry) married the love of his life, Joyce Patterson, on June 27, 1959, and they were happily married for 64 years. He began his career as a chemical engineer with the Occidental Chemical Corporation in Montague, Michigan. He steadily grew in his responsibilities with Oxy becoming a Production Department Supervisor, Plant Manager, a Director of Manufacturing, and finally a Director of Environmental Remedial Operations. With his job, Joyce and Jerry were transferred to several locations in the United States, including Niagara Falls, New York; Columbia, Tennessee; Dallas, Texas; and then back to Niagara Falls, New York. In retirement, they moved back to Michigan to be close to family. Jerry's favorite hobby was golf. He loved to play with his foursome (which included Laurie's husband Karl) at Niagara Frontier Country Club and relayed many humorous stories about their weekly rounds. Jerry also enjoyed traveling and in addition to visiting family he also made several trips to Hawaii, went on an Alaskan Cruise, and went to an all-inclusive resort in Mexico. Jerry was a loving and supportive father to his daughters, Laurie (Karl) Seper, Linda (Robert) Manzella, and Lisa (Kolan) Wright. He was a proud Grandpa to his grandchildren, Paul Seper, Brian (Grace Brown) Seper, Rocco (Sara) Manzella, Kaiden Manzella, Jena (Jon) Blevins, Eris (Percy), Noelle, Joel, Andrew, Matthew, and Hannah Wright. Jerry was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Elaine Blevins, KaeCee Blevins, June Manzella (July 22, 2019 – August 24, 2020), and James (JJ) Manzella. In lieu of flowers, Jerry supported Shriners Children's and donations can be made accordingly.
