Obituary

George Jasperse was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to Cornelius and Cornelia Jasperse on June 11, 1928. He attended Sheboygan Christian School, North High School, Calvin College, and Western Michigan University.

After graduating from Calvin he taught for four years in Southwest Minnesota, then for thirty-six years at Unity Christian High School, and after he retired, at Hubei University in China.

George repeatedly said, "Teaching is the best job there is!" and affirmed that in all life as a teacher to his students, his children, his seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

George deeply loved his family: his loving wife of 61 years Nancy Jasperse; daughters Sher (who died of cancer in 2014), Sandy (Kelly) Hill, Jennifer (Tony) Cook, and Amy (Mike) Glaspie; grandchildren Chris (Izabel) Jasperse, Stacy (Joey) Cole, Steve (Jenni) Powers, Cody (Abby) Powers, Alex (Victoria) Powers, Ben (Elizabeth) Hill, and Annie Hill. George has eight great-grands, two of whom are named after him: Sophia Jasperse, JJ Cole, Maximus George Jasperse, Kaleb Cole, Parker Powers, Leo Cole, Nora Hill, and Georgia Powers. George leaves behind his brother Glenn, sister Barbara, and many nieces and nephews, but he will join his brother Lloyd, and daughter Sher, in their eternal home.

Faith was central to George's life, directing his focus to serving God in many ways. At Fuller Avenue Christian Reformed Church where he was a member for 61 years, he served several terms as an elder, taught catechism, served on committees and seldom missed a church service. George served on the Board of Oakdale Christian School and the GR Christian Association Board, and the Calvin Alumni Board. After he retired George worked with CRWRC in Disaster Response, managed a bookstore in Guam, and taught students in China and Haiti.

George loved college sports and had already begun to set up his chart for the '26-'27 football season, always hoping for Wisconsin to win. March Madness required two huge charts, one for predictions, one for actual results.

George was a lifelong learner. He read extensively and welcomed countless adventures that included traveling to all fifty states, ten Road Scholar sessions, and many CALL classes at Calvin University. Sadly, he will miss the Fall 2026 CALL classes he signed up for and an October Road Scholar class.

George passed away suddenly on Friday, August 14, 2026 while on vacation with family "up north." He will be missed so much, by so many.

A Memorial service will be held at Fuller Avenue Church (1239 Fuller Avenue SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49506) on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 11:00, with visitation from 10-11.
