Frieda (Miedema) Bierma, age 97, passed peacefully into the presence of God on December 16, 2023, after suffering a major stroke nearly a week prior. She was preceded in death by her daughter Susan Boersma (Bob) in 1996, her husband William in 2003, and all her siblings, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. She is survived by sons Lyle (Dawn) and Marc (Kim) and daughter Emilie Azkoul (Jeff), thirteen grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. Frieda was born in Ireton, Iowa, on February 27, 1926, to Dutch immigrant parents John and Jennie (Bleyenberg) Miedema. In 1945 she followed her husband-to-be to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she began working at Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services as a secretary. After her children were grown, she returned to Pine Rest as an assistant in the Chaplain's Office and later a medical transcriptionist. When she finally retired, she had served at Pine Rest for more than forty-five years! Frieda was a faithful member of Alger Park Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids for seventy years and also served with her husband as a CRC missionary to Nigeria from 1959 to 1965. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the Raybrook Chapel (2121 Raybrook St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546). Visitation will be from 10-11 am, prior to the service.
