Eunice P.
Raar
Apr 11, 1931 — Aug 29, 2026
Eunice Raar, 95, a resident of Beacon Hill at Eastgate in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on August 29, 2026. Eunice was born to Fannie and Andrew Pasma in Moline Michigan on April 11, 1931, one of eight surviving children.
Eunice attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI and later received her B.A. degree at the University of Michigan. After marrying Dale in 1952, Eunice moved to Pine Bluff, Arkansas while Dale was serving in the US Army.
Back in Michigan, Eunice was a teacher in Detroit, where she brought her charisma and fondness for education to middle school students. Later on, Eunice would continue to support educational initiatives through various foundations and especially her long association with the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO).
While moving around the country with IBM, Dale and Eunice maintained their emphasis on family, church, and their passion for leadership in youth ministry. Meanwhile Eunice frequently participated in committees and organizations dedicated to pastoral care. While in San Jose, CA, Eunice and Dale helped plant a new church as charter members of the Saratoga United Presbyterian Church.
After returning to Michigan, Eunice and Dale became members of the First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, MI, their church home for decades. Among the many associations at the church, they became long-time leaders in the high school youth group (FOCUS). Eunice also took on other leadership roles, serving on the pastor nominating committee multiple times and assisting community initiatives such as the Furniture Resource Center in Pontiac, MI.
Eventually the opportunity to live in Europe led Eunice and Dale to Germany and then even to France. Living in Paris was great fun and a new chance to join a church: The American Church in Paris. Those five years in Europe allowed them to travel extensively and continue to make friends in new places. The ACP and the AFCU (American Foreign Christian Union) became important new causes for them. Eunice has been a steadfast supporter of these since returning to the United States over thirty years ago.
Throughout her life, Eunice was dedicated to music. At every church she joined the choir, even at the American Church in Paris where she once had an opportunity to sing at Notre Dame Cathedral (a highlight for her music passion).
Eunice is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Dale Raar, as well as siblings Gerry, Jim, Grace, Gene, Lois, Ted, and Faith. Eunice is survived by her 3 children, Andrea (Kim) Allen, Dale (Carolyn), Tom (Carmen); eight grandchildren, Lizi, Phil (Kristen), Hannah (Wes), Dale (Alison), Matt (Emma), Kristy, Jake "Jules," Marshal, and one great-grandchild Charlotte "Charlie." Eunice is also survived by her sister-in-law, Lois Pasma and many nieces and nephews.
Eunice's ashes will be interred beside her husband's ashes at 1st Presbyterian Church of Birmingham Michigan where a memorial service will take place in November. There will also be a Celebration of Life memorial gathering that same weekend in Grand Rapids. The family is particularly grateful to the caring staff at Beacon Hill at Eastgate and Emmanuel Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the American Foreign Christian Union and the Beacon Hill Foundation Employee Scholarship Fund.
