Ellen Borger Monsma, age 79, passed from life on earth to eternal life on March 21, 2025. She was predeceased by her parents, Floyd and Doris Borger and her brother Fred Borger. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, George Monsma, Jr.; her brother James Borger; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Jeanne Borger, Judy Borger, John Monsma, Ruth Roy, Mary Monsma and Dennis VanderTuig, Mark and Grace Monsma; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, cousins, and other friends who will miss her greatly. Ellen earned a BA from Hope College, an MA from Indiana University, and a PhD from Rutgers University, all in French. She spent most of her career at Calvin College (now University), teaching French and in the Office of Off Campus Programs, from which she retired as Director. She also worked for the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (now World Renew), as a Consultant to the Development Bureau of the Evangelical Churches and Missions of Mali with her husband. and later applying for and administering grants in the Grand Rapids office. She also volunteered her time and talents at her church, including serving as deacon and elder; and in leadership in other organizations, including the Committee for Women in the Christian Reformed Church and the CALL/Calvin Alumni Travel Committee. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, March 29, at Sherman Street CRC; friends may meet with the family from 10:30 to 11:45 am before the service.
