Obituary

Edward Hoezee, 85, went into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the evening of August 22 following a struggle with dementia in recent years. Ed was born in Zeeland, Michigan, and eventually served in the U.S. Army. Following his education at Hope College (he also later earned a Masters degree from Western Michigan University and did further studies at Central Michigan University) he served in the Forest Hills Public Schools for 34 years as a high school math teacher and one of the first computer teachers at both Forest Hills Central and Forest Hills Northern and he chaired his department in both schools for many years. Although he taught in the public school system, Ed's Christian faith always shone through and for many years he prayed with sports teams before games, praying not for victory but for good sportsmanship and the display of good character. Ed always displayed his own Christ-like character in all he did, consistently being a deacon, elder, and Council leader at Alger Park CRC and Ada CRC and being known as the finest handyman at Ed and Virg's summertime oasis at the Dorsey trailer park at Glen Lake in northern Michigan. For many years Ed was a courageous volunteer firefighter and lieutenant in the Ada Fire Department. He was also essentially unbeatable in a game of Cribbage! Ed was a devoted husband to the love of his life of 65 years, Virginia, and was a wonderfully loving, fun, and always quick-witted presence for his whole family and especially for his cherished grandchildren. Ed is survived by his wife, Virginia; sons Scott and Rosemary Apol Hoezee, Tim and Heather Hoezee; grandchildren Julianna (Alex) Katerberg, Graham Apol Hoezee, Lauren Hoezee, and Benjamin Hoezee. Visitation will take place at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, 49546) on Wednesday, August 28 from 6:00pm-8:00pm and one hour prior to the 11:00am funeral on Thursday, August 29 at Central Reformed Church (10 College Ave NE, Grand Rapids, 49503), the Rev. Dr. Steven Pierce officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Addie's Food Pantry at Central Reformed Church or Hospice of Michigan, whose staff was so helpful to the family in the last couple of weeks.
