Doris
Takens
May 23, 1932 — May 31, 2025
Doris Mae (Vander Berg) Takens, affectionately known as Oma or Dorie, was a beacon of light and love throughout her 93 years of life. Born on May 23, 1932, in Grand Rapids, MI, Oma's journey came full circle as she passed away peacefully in the same city on May 31, 2025. Her radiant smile and infectious laughter left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew her.
Oma's legacy is one of enduring love, faith and family. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 65 years, Joseph Peter Takens Sr., her parents Anna (Wilkins) and Peter Vander Berg, her sisters Eleanor Vander Berg, Elaine McDowell, and her brother Leonard Vander Berg. Her spirit continues to live on through her siblings Darlene Bykerk, Coral VanDe Burg, Ruth Zerfas, Raymond (Cheryl) Vander Berg, David (Doris) Vander Berg, and sister-in-law Marian Takens. Oma's remarkable life is celebrated by her children Jeanne (Kelly) Prebble, Joyce (Tim) Lont, Joseph (LuAnn) Takens, and Judy (Jim) Voss, her cherished grandchildren; Brandon (Meghan) Takens, Christina Takens, Heidi (Andrew) Steenwyk, Tracy(Brian) Niewiek, Jimmy Lont, Joe (Amber) Takens, Tim (Becky) Takens, Bradley (Alicia) Takens, Janell Takens, Keith Takens, Erika Voss, Colin Voss, Trent(Alexis) Voss and her 24 great-grandchildren who were the twinkling stars in her sky.
The story of Oma's life is a testament to the power of friendship. A proud graduate of Creston High School in 1952, her lifelong friendship with Doris ("Barnyard") VandenBerg was a treasured relationship that spanned over nine decades. Oma's career at Russ' Restaurant, where she worked at two different locations, was marked by her steadfast work ethic and her ability to turn coworkers and customers into friends.
Oma's zest for life was unparalleled. Her competitive nature shone brilliantly whether she was bowling over 200 pins in a single game, swinging her golf club with precision, or hitting a home run on the softball field. Yet, Oma's interests were as diverse as they were passionate. She was a tour guide. She relished camping trips with her grandchildren, creating memories while enjoying the great outdoors. Dorie and Joe loved to travel, from taking scenic cruises with family and friends to collecting seashells at their winter condo in Pompano Beach, Florida. Her love for travel was only matched by her love for her Lord and family.
Oma and Opa loved going to football games and of course the West Michigan Whitecaps (partial ownership for 35 years). Her ability to connect with people, to share a kind word or a warm embrace transformed every encounter into a moment of significance.
Oma's life was a beautiful journey of faith and family.
