Dewey R. Heetderks, Jr., MD, aged 95, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Breton Ridge, part of Holland Home, in Grand Rapids. Dewey lived his life in joyful obedience to Christ, and his family rejoices knowing he is now in eternal joy and peace.
Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Dewey was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, his beloved wife of 62 years, and by Jeanne, his beloved wife of 5 years; his parents, Dewey Sr. and Lorna Pattenson; his sister, Charlotte; and his brother, John. He is survived by Jeanne's family as well as his children: Lora (Rick) DeJonge, Julia (Wayne) De Vos, and Tom (Gwen) Heetderks; his grandchildren - Michael DeJonge, Nathan (Erika) DeJonge, Lauren (Ryan) Iannuzzelli, Paul De Vos, Marcus (Karlee) De Vos, Luke De Vos, David Heetderks, Ryan (Liv) Heetderks, and Erica (Wes) Hammond - and his great-grandchildren: Zoe, Carter, Rylee, Conor, Roman, Naomi, and Annie.
Dewey graduated from Calvin College and the University of Michigan. After serving in New Mexico with the Army, he became a board-certified Urology fellow, a member of the American College of Surgeons, a Clinical Professor of Urology at the MSU School of Medicine, and a past President of the Medical Staff at Butterworth Hospital.
A long-time member of Shawnee Park CRC, Dewey served faithfully in numerous administrative, leadership, and mission roles. Outside of his professional and church commitments, he found joy in wood turning, antique bottle collecting, and golf with friends and family. He was a guiding presence and deeply loved by many. Most importantly, Dewey - Chummy, Chum, Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa - was a faithful servant of Christ.
Family and friends are invited to visitation at Shawnee Park CRC (2255 Tecumseh Drive SE) on Saturday, October 24, from 10-11 AM, followed by a memorial service from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Visiting Angels for their loving care and compassion. Those wishing to offer expressions of sympathy are encouraged to make memorial contributions to Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods or to Shawnee Park CRC.
