David Henry
Van Dyke
Aug 11, 1938 — Apr 15, 2024
David Henry Van Dyke, age 85, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024. He was born in East Grand Rapids on August 11, 1938, to Gilbert and Irene Van Dyke, educated at Hope College and the University of Michigan, and earned a medical degree in neurology. His residency training took place at the University of Michigan and at The Peter Bent Brigham Boston Children's Hospital. He was a medical school faculty member at the University of Rochester, the University of Nebraska, and at Michigan State University. David was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Koopman Van Dyke. They were married for 58 years, and their legacy continues with their son, John Van Dyke (Nicole), their grandson, David, brother-in-law, the Rev. Leroy Koopman, and nieces and nephews. In recent years, David's beloved companion has been Marianne Gritter. David was an amateur musician, avid reader, and an active member at Central Reformed Church (10 College Ave NE). As a committed Christian, David wholeheartedly believed that "I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ" (Heidelberg Catechism 1). A private committal service, officiated by the Rev. Steven D. Pierce, will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery on Monday, April 22. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Reformed Church or to the Grand Rapids Symphony.
