Obituary

David Joel Tulos, age 88, of Grand Rapids, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

David was born in 1937 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Joseph and Helen Tulos, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1955 and earned his degree in architecture from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor in 1960, where he met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Parr.

As an architect, David contributed to the design of several public buildings—places that many may pass by or use every day—leaving a quiet but lasting mark on the community he loved. He also cherished designing his family home, where he and Mary raised their children and hosted family celebrations for 50 years.

David will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his wife of 66 years, Mary (Parr) Tulos; their four children, Robert (Bobbi) Tulos, Elizabeth (Lars) Beholz, Carol (Larry "Joe") Kopenkoskey, and Sharon (Robert) Martwick; his many cherished grandchildren, Allison (Chris), Josiah, Pierce (Taylor), Isabelle, Sabrina, Braden, Bridget, Sylvia, Thor, Aurora, Robert, and Benjamin; and his great-grandson, Isaac.

A devoted family man, David found joy in time spent with those he loved. He raised and trained Vizslas, restored and drove MGs as a member of the Old Speckled Hen Club, and enjoyed home improvement projects.

David and Mary shared a love of travel, journeying together with the University of Michigan Alumni Club and Park Church UCC on trips throughout Europe, as well as to Israel and Egypt. They also enjoyed countless drives throughout Michigan, visits to national parks, and historic Route 66.

An avid photographer and artist working in oil, pastels, and charcoal, David was a member of the Grand Valley Artists. He drew inspiration from his travels and created an impressive body of work.

Faith was an important part of David's life. David grew up attending Park Church UCC, and he and Mary raised their children as active members of the congregation. He was engaged in small groups and later pursued a deeper study of theology. For the last decade, he and Mary have been members of Brookside CRC.

Funeral services, including committal, will be held on Friday, May 8, at 1:00 p.m. at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton Street SE, Grand Rapids (49546), with Rev. Paul DeVries and Rev.
