Obituary

Daniel (Dan) James Davis joined his Lord and Savior in Heaven on the morning of October 18, 2023.

Dan was born in Saginaw, Michigan, to Carl and Genevieve Davis, on November 9, 1952. Within a few years, Dan moved to Alma, Michigan, with his family. Surviving spinal meningitis as a young child, Dan proved even then to be a fighter.

Dan's middle school and high school years were spent at Missouri Military Academy (MMA) where he found success in Boxing, Wrestling, Swimming, Football, and ROTC. While at MMA he rose through the ranks to Second Lieutenant upon his graduation in 1971. Many years later, Dan proudly served as the President of MMA Alumni.

He then attended Ferris State University (FSU) and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business and Heavy Equipment. While at FSU, Dan met his future wife, Leslie Walsh Davis, and his lifelong friend Dan Kerjes. He and Leslie have been married for 38 beautiful years.

Dan was a man of love and kindness who displayed a tenacious work ethic. He started working in trailer maintenance at Yellow Freight Systems and transitioned into other companies before starting two of his own. In his words, "You never work a day in your life if you love what you do," and Dan loved what he did.

Dan pursued several passions including restoring Chevy pickup trucks, something he loved to do with his son, Gannon, along with his dear friends, Dan Kerjes, Jeff Brookins, Ray Dickson and others. Nature often called to Dan. Kayaking brought Dan great joy which he experienced with his children, Gannon and Maddie, his niece and nephews, and lifelong friend, Greg Currie. He also enjoyed hiking with his family and close friend Harry Seplinga. Dan's great love for God was evident in everything he did and he followed our Lord faithfully and with great enthusiasm. In service, Dan volunteered for years as a Children's Leader at Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), led after school programs, and taught in the county jail.

Dan was a kind man who loved his family, friends and the Lord dearly. He is preceded in Heaven by his father, Carl Davis, his mother, Genevieve Davis (Milloy), his sister, Jean (Davis) King, his dear brother, Michael 'Mike' Davis, his aunt, Eilene 'Enie' Milloy, and his nephew, Davis Kessler. He is survived on Earth by his loving wife, Leslie Walsh Davis, his children, Gannon Davis and Madeline (Maddie) Davis, and his son-in-law Elio Stante. His siblings: Eilene (Davis) and Mike Shore, Carl 'CJ' & Susan Davis, Catherine 'Cate' Davis and Gordon 'Gordie' Stryker, Margaret (Davis) and Jonathon Ruffing, Martha (Davis) and Gregory 'Greg' Kessler, and Debra (McKensie) Davis, his nieces and nephews: Charles 'Chuck' and Cindy (Bond) King, Barbara (King) and Stephen Wilson, Aaron and Whitney (Brock) Fershee, Joshua Fershee and Kendra Huard Fershee, Catherine (Ruffing) and Carl Drotleff, Michael and Leslie (Smith) Ruffing, Carter Ruffing, Matthew Ruffing, McCarthy Kessler, David and Brittany (Aller) Walsh, Meredith (Walsh) and Justin DeLuca, Natalie Walsh, and Lana Walsh. He is also survived on Earth by many cousins, great-nieces and nephews as well as dear friends.

Dan's service will be held at Zaagman Memorial Chapel at 2800 Burton Street SE Grand Rapids, MI, 49546 on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. The visitation will begin at 11am, with the service beginning at 12pm and a luncheon to follow.

If interested, donations can be made in Dan's honor to Habitat for Humanity.
