Obituary

Charles H. Bos was called home on January 2, 2023 after a brief, courageous, but devastating battle with prostate cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. We will miss his steadfast presence, quick wit and fierce love for us.

He was born on March 6, 1949 to Gilbert and Jessie (Gerding) Bos in Holland, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister, Barb Ponstein. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Karen (Nagelkirk); son Andy (Suzi Borgdorff) and their kids Peter, Isaiah and Johanna; daughter Jodi (Patrick Center) and their daughters Sienna and Norah. He is also survived by his brother, Ken (Fay Bremer), and his sister, Mary Eberhard, as well as an impressive group of in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Chuck attended Holland Christian High School and Calvin College - graduating with degrees in sociology and psychology. He spent most of his career in the insurance industry. As a young professional, he worked in insurance claims management. The highlight of his working life was when he spearheaded and managed the Special Investigations Unit (anti-fraud) for Foremost Insurance. Although he found joy in his relationships with his colleagues, he never defined himself by his work. He was much more interested in all of the other parts of his life. He was an avid biker, golfer and runner. He loved to travel and was always up for an adventure. He was also an excellent happy hour companion - thoroughly enjoying a beer on the deck and the conversation that came along with it. In all of this, his primary identity was as a follower of Jesus. That love informed who and whose he was. He faithfully wrestled with what it meant to be a bearer of the Light in our complicated and broken world. Upon retirement in 2014, his primary job became volunteering for a number of local charities in an effort to shine that light.

Perhaps his greatest joy was found in his role as Grandpa to his five adoring grandkids. Those kids cracked his heart wide open and brought out the best in him, and he in them. He fundamentally helped shape who they are and they will be his legacy.

Please celebrate his life with us. A memorial service will be held on January 16, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Ada Bible Church - East Paris Campus (1640 East Paris Ave SE). You can visit with the family before the service from 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm or at the reception following the service. If you'd like to make a memorial contribution in honor of Chuck, please consider a donation to a place that was close to his heart - to either Living Stones Academy (1415 Lyon St NE Grand Rapids, MI 49503) or Degage Ministries (144 Division Ave S Grand Rapids, MI 49503).
