Obituary

Surrounded by his family, Bruce Barry Brintnall, MD. passed quietly on Friday December 15, 2023. He was 81.

Son of Arthur Brintnall and Leden Stewart, Bruce was born on March 9, 1942, in East Jordan, Michigan. The youngest of the family's five children (Irene, Lorena, Gale, Elgy). Bruce graduated from East Jordan High School in 1959 where he earned the title of valedictorian. He continued his education at Alma College, finishing his undergraduate degree in 3 years despite working full time and serving as a key member of on the tennis team. Bruce then attended the University of Michigan Medical School, again graduating with high honors. Bruce and Ruth Ann met in Saginaw Michigan in 1967. The two were engaged after only 6 weeks, wherein they began their loving marriage of 56 years.

Bruce served in the United States Army from (1970-1973) in Germersheim, Germany. He reached the rank of Major and received special commendation for his exemplary service as the commanding officer of the medical garrison and active member of the local community. Following his return to the United States and completion of his residency, he joined Grand Valley Internal Medicine Specialists, a collaborative medical practice that continues today.

Bruce compassionately practiced medicine for nearly 40 years. He was an ardent patient advocate and gifted instructor who trained countless professionals throughout his career. Bruce's medical career defined the standard of care and excellence for the practice of internal medicine. He continued his practice as a volunteer following retirement and earned awards from The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University and the Michigan Primary Care Association.

Kind, gentle, and intelligent, Bruce exuded quiet confidence and conducted himself with a characteristic unassuming demeanor. He gave selflessly of himself and asked for nothing in return. His work ethic and perseverance were unmatched. If you were fortunate enough to know him you, no doubt, you observed his good-natured whit. Bruce loved his family deeply and their lives served as his favorite pastime. He adored tennis, time spent at Torch Lake, and hunting and fishing. He professed to hate snow, ate butter and ice cream with impunity, and was intensely competitive. His unexpected death has left a void in our hearts, but his life and love remain as a steadfast example of the immeasurable impact an individual can have on his community.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife Ruth Ann Brintnall, their daughter Jennifer (Chris) Bell, son Chad (Sara) Brintnall, son Marc (Holly) Brintnall, and adoring grandchildren McKenzie, Madeline, Hope, Jackson, Sean, Colton, Lydia and Corinne.
