Wierenga
Apr 22, 1931 — Feb 6, 2026
Betty Ann Wierenga, age 94, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior on February 6, 2026.
Betty was born on April 22, 1931, in Harvey, North Dakota, to Alfred and Hazel Berg. She lived a full, vibrant life defined by curiosity, connection, and an extraordinary love for family and friends.
She is survived by her three daughters: Jane Johnson (Mark), Kristi Rickert (Dave), Sandra Cundiff (James), and their father Rodney Wierenga; Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jason and Kelly Johnson, Grady and Logan Johnson, Tim and K.C. Johnson, Sloane and Gwen Johnson, Amy Gillette, Hunter, Colton, and Maddie Gillette, Samantha and Max Wright, Grayson and Oliver Wright, Becky and Austin Sherman, and Camden and Charlie Rose Sherman. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Hazel Berg, her brother Robert Berg, and infant grandson Thomas Stephens Jr.
Betty graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, which led to her RN license. She worked in many hospitals throughout her career. She ultimately found her calling as an instructor at Butterworth Hospital, where she shared her knowledge, skill, and care with future generations of nurses.
A Life Master Duplicate Bridge player, Betty loved playing bridge with her many friends and was known for her sharp mind and competitive spirit. Cards were a lifelong joy, whether around a bridge table or with family and friends. She would play cards at any time of the day!
Betty was a natural host who loved throwing parties, complete with beautiful decorations and incredible food. Cooking was one of her great pleasures, and she delighted in feeding the people she loved. She was also an enthusiastic collector – of salt and pepper shakers, dishes, cookbooks, costume jewelry, clothing, books, and decorations – each item reflecting her personality and zest for life.
She was also known for her love of cruising, and one of her favorite things to do was sit on the balcony and watch the ocean go by.
Above all, Betty treasured time with her family and friends, filling her home with laughter, warmth, and love.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Sunset Manor. She loved everyone there and considered them all friends. Also, a huge thank you to Hospice staff, especially Esther, Brian, Roberta, and Holly.
A celebration of life will be held with family in the spring. Memorial contributions can be directed to Hospice and Palliative Care West Michigan.
