Obituary

Benjamin Aaron Patterson, age 62, of Grand Rapids, passed away on March 4, 2026.

Ben was a beloved son, husband, father and follower of Christ. Known for his wide-reaching love for others, creative spark in poetry, and love for music, Ben's personality was not just unique, but a breath of fresh air and rejuvenation for all who had the opportunity to know him. Ben had an eclectic ear for music, ranging from classical, bluegrass, christian rock, jazz, and pop. A few examples are Phil Keaggy, Ricky Skaggs, Rich Mullins, The Oh Hellos, Dave Brubreck, The Electrolyte Orchestra and many more. Though at times he was a man of few words, he never wasted the words he chose. Many people over the years have had their lives changed by just a conversation, a smile, and a silly glance given by him.

These precious moments were made even more substantial after he was diagnosed with Sezary Syndrome in October of 2020. Though it was obvious he was suffering on the outside, he never complained and never gave up on anyone, including his own fight. After an arduous five-year battle against many rapid onset issues, his body was not able to keep up with the fight he still had in his spirit, passing on to be with the Lord while being cared for by his wife and son at his side.

Ben is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Vickie Patterson; his son, Richard Cordell Patterson; his mother, Loutisha Patterson; his brother, Ralph (Diana) Patterson and many Nieces and Nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Cordell Patterson; and sister, Sophia Yvette Patterson.

He was also a loved and cherished member of River of Life Ministries and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at River of Life Ministries (3412 Leonard St NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49534), on Saturday, March 21st, at 11:00 AM.
