Beatrice Marie Hoek, affectionately known as 'Bea' by those whose lives she touched, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after a life rich in love, service, and courage. Born on September 21, 1941, in Racine, Wisconsin, Beatrice grew to become a beacon of hope and faith to everyone around her. Beatrice was predeceased by her parents John and Sadie (Kuiper) Hofman. Her legacy continues through her loving husband of 59 years, James Hoek, her children Jonathon (Laureen), Jayne (Keith) Ver Beek, and Jackie (Larry) Crawford. Her memory will be cherished by her adored grandchildren Sarah (David) Babulic, Ryan, Ross (Kyra), and Noah (Nicole) Hoek, Ashley, Nicole, Erika, and Lydia Ver Beek, Tyler (fiancée Lacey) Sisco, Maddy (Michael) Velting, Lucas Crawford, Lukas Sisco, as well as her treasured great-grandchildren Trevor Babulic, Kendenyce Babulic, Cambria Hoek, Willem Hoek, the forthcoming baby boy Hoek, Isaac Sisco, and Kalina Sisco. Beatrice is also survived by her brother Richard Hofman and sister-in-law Marilyn Tanner. After attending Calvin College, Beatrice shared her passion for learning as an elementary teacher for three years and continued to shape young minds as a substitute teacher throughout her subsequent years. But her impact extended far beyond the classroom. Beatrice authored two books, "Surrender or Fight: One Woman's Victory Over Cancer" and "Cancer Lives in Our House: Hope for the Family," sharing her courageous battle and victory over cancer numerous times with a voice of resilience and hope. Beatrice's deep-rooted faith and conviction illuminated not only her writing but every aspect of her existence. Whether playing the organ, leading Bible studies, participating in Coffee Break, prayer groups, or serving in her church, she exemplified a spirit of giving and guidance. Bea was known for her incredible hospitality, often entertaining friends and family with the same warmth and love that she poured into every relationship. Her role as a grandmother brought Beatrice immeasurable joy, a sentiment that was evident in the laughter and stories that filled her home. Together with Jim, she traveled, welcomed countless friends, and stood as the embodiment of pure, unwavering love. An ever-present supporter, Bea never missed an opportunity to attend Jim's band concerts, with her faith and commitment shining through her enduring support and partnership. Friends from her hometown of Racine, Wisconsin, Lansing, Illinois, and Grand Rapids, Michigan recall Beatrice's generosity and faith-filled life. Her unwavering love for her Father in heaven was evident in the way she fearlessly proclaimed Christ and shared joy with everyone she encountered. Bea's life verse was "The Joy of the Lord is my Strength," Nehemiah 8:10. Bea's strong faith, bravery, sense of humor, and love became the fabric of her being, qualities that made her a beloved figure in countless lives. Jim, her husband, and extraordinary caregiver was Bea's steadfast companion throughout their 59-year marriage, a testament to their shared values, love, and commitment. Beatrice's life was a living example of the words that best describe her: loving, generous, and faithful. She was a shining testament to the strength of the Holy Spirit, leaving behind a beautiful tapestry woven with the lives she touched and the love she shared.
