Barbara J.
Leegwater
Jul 7, 1939 — Nov 5, 2025
Barbara J. Leegwater, age 86, of Grand Rapids, was peacefully called home to be with her Heavenly Father on November 5, 2025. She was born in 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio to Martin and Nella Pape.
Barb lived a life marked by deep faith, compassion and a heart for service. Her passion for Christ and caring for others led her into a career in nursing at Blodgett Hospital and then at Metro Health. Following her nursing career, she continued to serve others and was a very active volunteer. She taught sewing at Baxter Community Center, empowering women with practical skills to support themselves. She was gifted with great creativity which she implemented in her sewing to make beautiful and spiritually-inspired banners and stoles for her churches and pastors. Barb also served for many years as a volunteer in the prison ministry at Bellamy Creek and Handlon Correctional Facilities making a profound impact by bringing the hope and love of Christ to those behind bars. The changed hearts and minds of all those she impacted are a legacy that will live on for years to come.
Barb lived daily by the simple principle reflected in a favorite phrase: "You loved us well." Her love was selfless and unconditional. She wanted to ensure those around her felt loved and valued. She loved with the love of Jesus and she inspired others to love that way as well.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband John, brother-in-law Arie Leegwater, and sisters-in-law Polly Plekker and Betty VanderIest. She is lovingly remembered by her children Mark (Gwen) and Steve (Nanette), grandchildren Erin, Tom (Lauren), Noah, Adam, and Ellen (Cody), sister Joyce (John Leeth), sister-in-law Mary (Keith Beavon) and brother-in-law Bernie VanderIest.
