Arlene Mary Smith, AKA Mrs. Poppa 83 of East Grand Rapids Passed away Friday, February 2, 2024 at her home surrounded by family. She was born in Grand Rapids on September 23, 1940 to the late Jack and Anne McCarthy.

Arlene was a lifelong resident of East Grand Rapids, graduating in 1958. She worked for J'Poppas and 7-11 and then managed the delivery department at Molesta Floral prior to retiring. She loved East Grand Rapids Pioneer Football, collecting owls, playing Bingo, and riding motorcycles in her younger years.

She was survived by her children, Kayleen (Brian) Fischer, Collene Holcomb, Kendell (Shelly) Shangle, JaLean Smith, Jo-Lean Smith (Jeff), and Denise (Russ) Wheeler. She was blessed with 18 Grandchildren and 10 Great Grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Anne and Jack McCarthy, daughter Karoleen Shangle, granddaughters Emily Holcomb and Emma Adams.

Cremation has taken place.

The family would like to give thanks to Home Instead and her special caregivers Tony and Brittany along with Corewell Health Hospice Team.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Wednesday February 7, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
