Ann Mae Janssen Noteboom went into the presence of her Lord on December 30, 2025, after a short illness, just shy of her 103rd birthday. She was born Ann Mae Janssen in Wellsburg, Iowa to Claus and Ida Janssen on January 23, 1923. She graduated from Steamboat Rock High School in 1940, and from Calvin College in 1946, having majored in English, Speech and Shakespeare. She was awarded a PH.D from Northwestern University (Illinois) and taught at Calvin College from 1956 until her retirement in 1988.
In the spring of 1966, Ann met William Noteboom on a blind date, a widower with six children. They married in August with all the children taking part in their wedding. Surviving are her step-children Marjo (Rick) Shields (Hickory Corners), Mieneke (Steve) Thomas (Richland), Grace Noteboom (The Netherlands), Jane (John) Oosting (Barrie, Ontario),Tineke (Harry) Stolt (Richland), and John (Beth) Noteboom (Cutlerville). Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband William (2004) brother Al, sister-in-law Mildred Janssen Griffin, and granddaughter Karin Thomas.
She was a long time member of Calvin CRC Church, living at Beacon Hill at Eastgate the past 14 years. Ann enjoyed
singing in the church choir, was an avid reader, and especially loved poetry. She belonged to various book clubs, Bible studies and enjoyed traveling to see family, and exercising. She was a talented seamstress, making many lovely clothes in her early years, and enjoyed cooking and baking for her large family. She was known as "purple grandma" by many of her grandkids as she loved that color.
Her "Celebration of Life" will be at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel (Burton Street) on January 5, 2026 at 1:00 PM with visitation starting one hour before the service. Reverend Rebecca Jordan-Heys will officiate with internment following at Garfield Park Cemetery.
