Alice Jane Cochrane Hoch Hilgenberg, age 88, known to family and friends as Jane, passed away on December 15, 2025.

Jane was born in October 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to John C. Cochrane and Alice LeRoy Cochrane.

When Jane was a child her parents moved to New Jersey, where she was raised. She graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in zoology and later earned a teaching degree from Columbia University. While teaching in New Jersey, she met her husband, Carl Hoch, Jr., and eventually accompanied him to Grand Rapids, Michigan. There, Jane and Carl raised their son, Carl Hoch III. Jane worked for Prein & Newhof as an Environmental Analytical Chemist for 30 years until her retirement, while Carl taught at Cornerstone University. They also became active with the Grand Rapids Accordion Ensemble.

After Carl's death, Jane married Bob Hilgenberg. They enjoyed traveling, working with refugees through their church—Thornapple Evangelical Covenant Church—and continued their involvement with the Grand Rapids Accordion Ensemble.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Carl Hoch, Jr.; her son, Carl Hoch III; her second husband, Robert Hilgenberg; two nephews, Thomas and William Cochrane; and her half-brother, George Cochrane. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Virginia Cochrane; her nephew, Ken Cochrane (Pam); her niece, Cyndee Cochrane Sturtevant; her cousin, Georgia Haynes; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Jane's friends and family would like to thank the staff at Porter Hills Cedar Court for their compassionate care over the past couple of years.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at Thornapple Evangelical Covenant Church, 6595 Cascade Road SE.
