Alice Mae
Fishman
Sep 30, 1923 — Sep 12, 2023
On September 12, 2023, Alice Fishman went home to her Lord.
She was born Alice Mae Hudecek on September 30, 1932 to parents Mae Mildred (Mares) Hudecek and Frank James Hudecek in Berwyn, Illinois. As a girl she also lived in Dormont, PA, and Lakeside, OH. She found Jesus as a teenager, and often reflected that He is the one who enabled her to endure her parents' divorce a few months later. She and her mother moved back to Chicago, where she met Frank John Fishman Jr. at the John Huss United Methodist Church. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1953, she married Frank on June 14, 1954. In the course of their marriage they lived in Somerville, MA; Melrose, MA; Adrian, MI; and Grand Rapids, MI. Five children were born to them. She also cared for 22 foster infants while living in Adrian.
Alice is survived by her husband Frank John Fishman; children Faith Ann Fishman, Carl Frederick Fishman, Andrew Grant (Joyce) Fishman, and Philip Henry (Jean) Fishman; and grandchildren Stephen, Daniel, Anna, and Emily Fishman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Charles Hudecek, and her son Jonathan Mark Fishman.
Alice was always very active in her churches: Green Street Baptist Church (Melrose), First Baptist Church (Adrian), and Burton Baptist Church (Grand Rapids). She began teaching Sunday School for middle school children when she was a teenager, and she taught various ages of children and adults off and on for the rest of her life. In 2006 she was recognized as a "Valiant Woman" by Church Women United. She and Frank have also been very involved in The Gideons International for many years. She has given years of volunteer service to UNICEF, the Grand Rapids Hunger Walk, Olds Manor (shopping cart ministry), and the Grand Rapids Public Library, as well as to her churches.
Alice was enthusiastic about camping and traveling, and over the course of her life has traveled to all fifty states, all the Canadian provinces, England, Scotland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, China, New Zealand, Australia, and the length of the Danube River in Europe. She greatly enjoyed singing, and was part of the University of Illinois Oratorio Society, the Adrian Community Choir, the Kentwood Senior Singers, the Samaritas choir, and the church choir in each of her churches. Alice loved her family and shared with them her passion for reading and words, filling their home and lives with books. Her hobbies also included knitting, needlepoint, gardening, and working crossword puzzles.
Services will be at Burton Baptist Church (2010 Plymouth Ave. SE, Grand Rapids) on Saturday, September 23, 2023. Visitation will be from 10 AM to noon at the church, followed by the funeral service at noon. A luncheon will follow the service in the church's fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gideons International and would be appreciated.
