Robert K. & Marybeth Zaagman

Bob is the current business-owner and manager of Zaagman Memorial Chapel, and has been a licensed funeral director since 1965. He attended Calvin College and graduated from Wayne State University’s School of Mortuary Science. Bob and his wife, Marybeth have four children and ten grandchildren. Their two sons-in-law, Jim Koops and Corey Michael, are employees of the business. Bob and Marybeth enjoy boating and vacationing together whenever possible and they are members of Seymour Christian Reformed Church where Bob has served as an elder in years past. Their goals are to provide excellent, compassionate, and professional service to each and every family that comes to Zaagman’s during their time of need.

James E. Koops

Jim is a son-in-law of Bob and Marybeth Zaagman and is married to their daughter, Chris. Jim and Chris have three children, Alexander, Abagail, and Anna and are members of Cascade Fellowship CRC. Jim graduated from Calvin College in 1990 with a B.A in Political Science and also served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps before coming to work at Zaagman Memorial Chapel in 1997. Jim attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science and was licensed in 1998. He also enjoys mountain climbing and spending time with his family.

Corey A. Michael

Corey is also a son-in-law of Bob and Marybeth and is married to their daughter, Tammy. Corey graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 2002 and has also attended Ferris State University and Grand Rapids Community College. Corey and Tammy have a daughter, Gabriella; and twins, Max and Mackenzie. Corey is from Hart, Michigan and runs a youth camp during the summer through church.

Kenneth Zaagman

Kenneth was licensed in 1949 after graduating from Wayne State University’s School of Mortuary Science. He was part owner as a third generation of funeral directors in the Zaagman family until retirement. He enjoyed part-time work as well as spending time at the family cottage in Grand Haven. He was married to Vera. He was a member of Boston Square CRC where he served as an elder, a deacon, and a maintenance volunteer.

Ken passed away November 18, 2008 following a short battle with cancer. He will be fondly remebered by his family, friends, and those he served.

Philip Zaagman

Philip was licensed as a funeral director in 1959 after graduating from Wayne State University’s School of Mortuary Science. He was a part owner of Zaagman’s with his brothers until retirement and now he assists at the funeral home part-time. He and his wife, Nancy have two children. They are members of Brookside CRC where Phil frequently helps maintain the landscaping.

Melissa Morrison

Melissa is a licensed funeral director and has been with Zaagman’s since 1989. She is married to her husband, Chris. She has three children, Cassandra, Rachel, and Hanna; two stepdaughters; one son-in-law; and a granddaughter. Melissa is a licensed funeral director and graduated from Wayne State University’s School of Mortuary Science. Melissa is currently our secretary and is well experienced with every aspect of funeral service. She stays busy with family and loves to travel on her time off from work.

Ronald D. Willit

Ron has been licensed since 1970 and he has been employed at Zaagman’s since 1992. He and his wife, Jane have two children and two granddaughters, Hannah and Ava. Ron and Jane live in the NE part of Grand Rapids. Ron’s interests include cars of all kinds, and watching NASCAR events. He enjoys his work and is glad to be able to help people in a time of need. Before coming to Zaagman’s, Ron owned his own funeral home in Berrien Springs, Michigan.

David A. Durston

David has been with Zaagman’s since he  graduated from Alma College with a B.S. in Exercise and Health Science in 2001. Just prior to licensure he earned a B.S. in Mortuary Science from Wayne State University. He is married to his wife, Missy, and they currently live in Kentwood. Dave’s interests include playing golf, traveling up-north to visit their hometown, working out, and vacationing together. Dave is a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

Brian E. Start

Brian has been a funeral director in various locations throughout the West Michigan area since 1989.  He enjoys running, mechanical equipment, and being an avid sportsman.

Lance R. Zaagman 

Lance was licensed in 2007 after graduating from the Cincinatti College of Mortuary Science the year prior.  He is the grandson of Milton Zaagman, a former owner of the funeral home.  Lance is from Byron Center and his interests include working out, participating in various athletic events, and he enjoys watersports during the summertime.

Paul A. Kooyer

Paul came to Zaagman's in 2007. He graduated from Grand Valley State University with a B.A. in Public Administration before graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in 2003 and became licensed that same year. Paul's interests included histrory and spending time with his wife, Lisa, and their two children. He and his family are members of Lee Street Christian Reformed Church.

Peter DeKoker

Pete was hired in 2000 as a full time maintenance director. He has his builder’s license and is skilled in many aspects of building and equipment maintenance. He is also able to use his people skills to assist on funerals and in greeting our patrons. Pete is married to Sandy; they have two children and three grandchildren.

Richard Otte

Rick is a full time teacher at Wyoming Public Schools and is Warren Otte’s son. Rick is a licensed funeral director having graduated from Wayne State School of Mortuary Science, he worked full time for Zaagman’s before pursuing his teaching career in alternative education after graduating from Calvin College. He and his family are members at Madison Square Christian Reformed Church.

Daniel Doezema

Dan greets visitors one day a week for us and helps out on special occasions whenever possible. Dan’s grandfather is the late Robert W. Zaagman, a former owner of the business. Dan graduated from Grand Valley State University and is an occupational therapist for St. Mary’s Health Center. He is married to his wife, Rachael and they have one son, Ethan.

Warren Otte

Warren is a retired teacher, principal, and guidance counselor for the Grand Rapids Christian Schools. Warren has worked for Zaagman’s since 2002. He greets visitors in the evening and also works on funerals during the daytime. He has been in charge of heading up Zaagman’s Community Room where he is staffed as the host in the room during a funeral luncheon. Warren is a member of Alger Park Christian Reformed Church and an alumnus of Calvin College.

Evelyn Dykstra & Helen DeVries

Evie and Helen are sisters who have worked for Zaagman’s since 2001. They both help us greet visitors on certain evenings and they are members of Lee Street Christian Reformed Church.

Charles VanderMeer

Charlie has worked for Zaagman’s since 2004 as a greeter in the evenings. He is better known as “Uncle Charlie” from the Children’s Bible Hour radio program. Charlie is also a member of Wealthy Park Baptist Church.
